San Mateo Life

Ok, if I don't update this blog I think it might fizzle out. So this will be a post about whatever is on my mind, just so I can say I've update the blog.

Fisrt off, I hope people don't get too confused about the blog title or url. Since we are no longer in Seattle it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to continue using the "Fongs in Seattle" moniker, but its kind of a hassle to change it and I think the three people that read our blog have it saved in their favorites anyways.

So it’s Martin’s birthday soon, (my brother), and once again I have no idea what to get him. At least we live close enough now that we can drive to Sac for a b-day shin-dig. Its been awhile since I’ve been able to visit him for his b-day. Still, cash is not a very good b-day gift and I have no idea what else he would like. He’s the kind of guy who “likes what he likes” and pretty much has his set routine so any gift you get will likely not fit said routine and be subtly discarded. Maybe I’ll get him something for his yard like a gnome or a troll.

Work has been crazy busy. Lots going on these days. The thing is I don’t see any sign of things stopping or slowing down. Although I did just get an email from HR saying I need to book at least one week of vacation or else I will lose it. Bean and I were supposed to go to Mexico before all this relocation stuff came about but with all the transition and buying a new condo we decided to postpone for a good while. I wonder what I’ll end up doing for my vacation…

At any rate, San Mateo is grand, and our condo isn’t half bad. Christine is working for See’s corporate office in Daly City and she got a new car! 2007 Nissan Versa. We got a pretty good deal on it since it was an ’07. Very practical car all-in-all. Its kind of small but it’s fairly spacious on the inside. Christine really likes it.

We're Moving Out Soon

We have movers coming to our house on Wed and they are going to pack all of our stuff in bubble wrap and/or boxes. It's for real. We're moving. To the Bay. Wow! The office doesn't open until early-mid Sept so I will be working from home for a few weeks. I might get a bit stir-crazy being cooped up in a one bdrm condo all day. Guess me and Bean will have to make good use of one of the many pools at our condo to enjoy a change of scenery.

We have a condo – San Mateo, CA

We just got back from our five day, whirlwind, house-hunting trip in the Bay Area. We ended up with a condo of our very own. Click the header for pics of the place.

Here is the scoop:
Sqft: 693
1bdrm/1bath
Patio, swimming pools, gym, close to transit.

The place was built in 1964 as an apt complex with 500 units. It was converted to condos in the 70's and just went through a $10MM assessment, (brand new roof, siding, windows, fire alarms, swimming pool, and gym). Uncle Al and other Bay Area friends and family say that San Mateo is a great central location on the mid peninsula and will be a really great commute to the office. One month left in Seattle!

The Move Down Date

Quick update: just found out that the earliest we can move down is Aug 1st. The target office open date is Sept 1st, but it could take as long as Oct. 1st to get the office fully up and running. Here's to working from home for a month! =D

We're Moving on Up, (Down)!

We'll it's in the bag! Christine and I have decided to move to S.F. After much prayer, open doors, closed doors, and area visit, we've decided to finalize this process by saying 'yes' to what God has for us in the Bay Area. On one hand we're entering into a cool job opp with Nintendo and moving closer to Clint's family. On the other hand we're leaving behind lots of friends and family in the Northwest and moving into a time of uncertainty for Christine's job. Hopefully we'll get a chance to meet up with everyone in the N before we leave. We'll definitely be going to the 4th of July event in Harrisburg and be making a church visit in Corvallis and Portland.

Emotionally, it feels like we're leaving a lot of great relationships and that is a very hard thing. That and we feel like we just got settled here in Seattle with the new house + housemates.

So I'm not sure what other news there is. Right now we're unsure if we'll be renting or buying. That also means we're not sure where we're going to live precisely. Anywhere from Fremont to The City. Although we are leaning towards the city, if Christine leaves staff work we may just rent somewhere near Redwood Shores,(Nintendo office location).

As of now Clint has not been offered a management spot, but we're stll working/praying hard towards that before the move. That would allow us to buy a small place rather than rent a small place. So we're hoping to be movin' on up in that sense but we'll be movin' down in a literal sense.

N-Sane Update

Looks like the unofficial word is that Nintendo Sales and Marketing is being relocated to San Mateo/Redwood City, CA. I've never been, and have no idea what it's like there. This is big news since we actually had no idea where in the South Bay Area the office was moving.

We're still undecided but this gives us a good deal more to consider.

N-Sane in the Membrane

Well just 48 hours ago I learned that my job is being relocated to the South Bay Area. While to many in the corporate world this type of transition may seem ordinary or commonplace, Nintendo is a company that grew to consider, 'conservative'. I mean, they have pension plans for those who stay on long enough. What kind of public company still gives employees pensions? At any rate this seems like a gutsy decision, one that I never in a million years would have seen coming. One that seems to follow a string of corporate decisions and frankly one that that I am becoming more and more excited about each day.

After I get past all of the fear, anger, resentment, and bitterness, I find that I'm pretty excited at the opportunity to help build a 'world-class Sales and Marketing office' in one of the hottest places to work, Silicon Valley. I know it's not what is was before the dot-com bust, but still, places like Mountain View and Cupertino are tough nuts to crack if you're looking for work. I've got the work part down now it's just a matter of housing... well, and the fact that Christine would have to uproot at a time when she feels she is in a groove after 4 years with ICVF. But so far she's been optimistic and willing to realistically consider the move.

As of Friday the 4th, I've submitted my resume for my boss's job, Channel Marketing Operations Manager. If I got the job I'd be managing one or two employees and have an opportunity to see a noticeable increase in my paycheck, (money/cost of living in the Silicon Valley being the biggest pain point in making a decision at this point). Although when considering housing in the Valley either Christine or I would still have to make a considerable amount more to afford even a townhouse, (right now visions of a 1 bdrm condo are dancing in my head), and given that we wanted a place big enough to have kids in, a condo would be a tight fit.

Another reason that money would be tight is that we just bought our house a little over a year ago with our friends Phil and Ellen Hoffman and there is a good possibility that we would keep it for at least two more years. So even if we had renters living with the Hoffmans we'd still be making a sizable four digit mortgage payment in Seattle. So not only are we looking at a situation where we might not make much in equity, but we also committed to be co-owners with the Hoffmans for at least three years. So if we actually decide to relocate then we need to discuss with them whether or not they want new roommates or if they want to sell the house, (Nintendo would actually pay the closing costs and I think we could claim 'unforeseen circumstance' to avoid Capital Gains tax). Wow. I can't imagine someone paying $535,000 for this 100 year old house, but then again we paid $485,000 a year ago and there was someone right behind us with a higher bid.

Whew. I can't believe I'm writing a crazy post like this.

So where was I? I have no idea. Anyways, I have to write a follow up post to fill in the cracks that I've missed. I think I covered all of the important details. Oh yeah, we have to decide by June 1st, otherwise my employment at Nintendo will end on Sept 27th. There are some options in Seattle, but right now he most compelling option from a career standpoint is Nintendo. I really want to be a part of this 'world-class' vision and get a foothold in one of the most competitive job markets that I can think of. Our company president said that this move is aimed at getting Nintendo on par with trademarks like: Apple, Google, etc. Tech companies that have a eye towards user interface and how people interact with the tech rather than tech for more performance sake.

Until next time, please comment away with questions and we'll respond to them.

Thanks all for your prayers.
